SCHOOL RATIFICATION — Pearl River School District Unit members recently ratified their second union contract since the Rockland County school district workers organized a union with CSEA. The newest agreement further improved the workers’ terms and conditions of employment, adding wage increases in both years of the agreement, improvements in the existing health insurance buyout and an improvement in the disciplinary procedures … MAKING STRIDES — Long Island Region members, led by Region President Nick LaMorte and the region’s Women’s Committee, again participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 20 at Jones Beach. CSEA Long Island Region members have long been active supporters of the fight against breast cancer. CSEA members from across the state are also participating in Making Strides events in their areas throughout October … ORLEANS COUNTY APPEAL — CSEA is reviewing options and preparing an appeal following the dismissal last month of a lawsuit challenging Orleans County’s creation of a limited development corporation for The Villages of Orleans Health and Rehabilitation Center. “We are disappointed that the judge found the claims in our legal action to be legislative or premature, but that does not mean that our claims are incorrect,” said Cindy Troy, CSEA Orleans County Unit president. “We will not back down from our belief that the legislature acted incorrectly, and that The Villages of Orleans must remain public and available to county residents.” The 2013-2014 Polar Plunge season is almost here! It is time to start planning for our chilly plunges into lakes and rivers all across New York to benefit the Special Olympics. CSEA has been partnering with Special Olympics for many years, even before the first Polar Plunge in winter 2007. Since then, our union has gone from raising a few thousand dollars to nearly $50,000 last year alone, but we are still only scratching the surface of CSEA membership involvement. IMAGINE WHAT WE COULD DO IF EVERYONE GOT INVOLVED. Won’t you join us and give reason to your winter freezin’? Visit CSEA’s website at www.cseany.org for the full polar plunge schedule and links to donate to your region’s team. We look forward to posting a link to each region’s fund-raising page on our website this year to heat up the competition for the President’s Polar Cap Award! Watch www.cseany.org for more information. Morris a true Hero of Labor to her community Long Island Region President Nick LaMorte congratulates Town of Huntington Unit member Theresa Morris for being honored by the Labor Press as a champion of the labor movement at the 2013 Heroes of Labor awards ceremony, which was held in Manhattan. LaMorte presented the award to Morris. Town of Huntington Unit President Rich Popkin also attended the ceremony. Morris, who works in the Town Comptroller’s Office, was honored because she and her husband Richard turned their home into a “community center” as the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy lingered last fall. The Morris’ Huntington Station home was among the first in the area to have their power restored after Hurricane Sandy, and the couple opened their home to allow their neighbors to do things such as charge their cell phones, check email, eat hot meals and take hot showers. Theresa and Richard Morris also opened their home in a similar manner after Hurricane Irene struck the area in 2011.
