Authority greet workers in 2015 overseen by the Thruway Authority. In 2013, 200 layoffs were announced for the Canal and Thruway authorities. In the end, 39 CSEA members lost their jobs at the Thruway and 39 at the Canal Authority. CSEA has filed a federal lawsuit over the layoffs. In the Thruway Authority, CSEA represents white collar titles: bridge inspectors, engineers, and higher-level administrative workers. The authority is not part of the state executive branch of government. — Lou Hmieleski, Therese Assalian Thruway facts New York State Thruway system, operated by the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) is comprised of 569 miles of highway. The main portion of the Thruway, measuring almost 500 miles, runs from outside of New York City in Yonkers to the Pennsylvania line at Ripley beyond Buffalo. Discussion of a Courtesy New York State Thruway Authority highway connecting New York’s major cities began in the 1940s. By 1954, the first section of Thruway between Rochester and Utica was operating with the remainder of the connecting spurs complete by the end of the decade. An executive director and board of directors make up the Thruway Authority that guides operations of both the Thruway and Canal Corporation. CSEA members working in the Canal Corporation are also working under an expired contract. CSEA represents more than 500 Thruway employees in four divisions throughout the state in professional and service titles such as engineers, accountants, maintenance supervisors and administrative assistants.
