Berkley Honoring a trailblazer for labor union women CSEA accepting nominations for the Irene Carr Leadership Award When Irene Carr first took a leadership role in CSEA, women were still largely expected to pour the coffee and take notes at meetings. But Carr, a longtime CSEA Statewide Secretary, instead played a strong leadership role in her union, paving the way for CSEA women to serve as leaders at every level of the union. Carr also helped lead the fight for on-and-off the job improvements for working women, and helped form the union’s Women’s Committee. For these reasons, CSEA presents the Irene Carr Leadership Award in her memory. The union is accepting applications for this year’s award, which will be presented during the Statewide Women’s Conference on May 2. “Every one of us knows someone within our CSEA family who stands out,” said CSEA Standing Women’s Committee Chair Kim Wallace-Russo. “Who is that person? That person is one who is driven and persistent enough to have fought, advocate and demand fairness for work and family issues.” Breaking ground A single mother when she first joined CSEA, Carr devoted her four-decade union career to fighting to advance issues traditionally of concern to women, issues that she referred to as “work and family issues.” Determined to be more than a “notetaker” at union meetings at a time when leadership opportunities were rare for women, Carr also helped shatter the glass ceiling that had prevented women in CSEA from seeking leadership positions. Women today hold the majority of CSEA’s leadership roles. A leading voice Carr played a key role in advancing numerous issues that improved the lives of working women in CSEA and across the nation, including pay equity adjustments for women and people of color, expanded clerical training opportunities and affordable child care. She also became a national advocate on behalf of women’s rights and affordable, work site child care. Carr was also the driving force that led to the formation of the CSEA Women’s Committee in 1978. She served as the committee’s first chair. Honoring a trailblazer The Irene Carr Leadership Award honors Carr’s accomplishments and urges union women to carry on Carr’s leadership and fighting spirit. CSEA is seeking award nominees who: • Fight every day for the members she represents. • Stand up and stand out as a leader in the fight for women’s rights and workers’ rights. • Step up despite the challenges before her. If you know such a person, visit CSEA’s website at www.cseany.org to download and complete the application. Nominations must be received no later than March 20, 2015.
