CSEA member killed on the job WARWICK — CSEA is mourning the loss of Southern Region member Tonny Teskera, 38, an Orange County Unit member and laborer who died on the job April 1 in a tree-clearing incident at the Hickory Hill Golf Course. Teskera, a 13-year county employee, was part of a tree crew working near the entrance of the county golf course when a tree other workers had cut down hit him on the head. He was later pronounced dead at Saint Anthony’s Community Hospital. CSEA and the state Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau are investigating the incident. CSEA has serious concerns about management’s failure to provide workers with proper safety equipment for tree removal. Teskera leaves behind his parents, a longtime girlfriend, Teskera a 6-year-old daughter and two boys he had helped raise. — Jessica Ladlee State contract negotiations: stay in the loop! Alan Teitler, 78, longtime CSEA activist STATEN ISLAND — Longtime CSEA Metropolitan Region activist Allan S. Teitler, 78, died April 13 in Staten Island. Teitler’s career spanned 25 years as an investigator for the former Crime Victims Board. He had also served as his local’s treasurer and vice president, retiring in 1995. “He was a dedicated unionist,” said former Metropolitan Region President George Boncoraglio, who also considered Teitler a personal friend. “Even in times of struggle, he found ways to make us laugh so we wouldn’t feel so bad. He was very passionate about what he did and the union was his life.” A U.S. Air Force veteran, Teitler was also skilled in needlecraft and textile arts. He enjoyed tatting, macrame, sewing and creating leather designs. “He was a very compassionate person and he always fought for the underdog, not only in our local and for our members, but even on the outside,” said CSEA New York City State Employees Local President Vincent Martusciello. Martusciello recalled how Teitler volunteered to work with the families of 9/11 victims immediately following the attacks. “He was very affected by 9/11,” said Martusciello. “He would share stories and get very emotional.” Teitler, a lifelong Staten Island resident who most recently lived in West Brighton, also took great pride in his family, often sharing stories that appeared in the local papers about his son, a member of an Emergency Service Unit (ESU), saving lives. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Rochelle; his sons, Howard and Mark; a sister, Eileen Greenspun, and four grandchildren. — David Galarza 2 The Work Force May 2015
