But some circumstances toward the end of the past year offer some essential truths about budget priorities and valuing the public sector work force. Last month, The Work Force offered important perspective on the vital role that public health workers provide in protecting people from health crises. Whether it’s Ebola, AIDS, SARS, H1N1/swine flue, Hepatitis C or other deadly diseases, public health workers are on the frontlines helping to educate and protect people every day. This month, the focus is on crews who responded magnificently to the recent historic snowfalls that put people at risk and threatened to cripple western New York. Those capable and dedicated crews responded bravely and professionally. They have continued to do so in communities across New York during some tough early season weather emergencies. New Yorkers should take pride in knowing that these crews will effectively respond to every crisis throughout the winter. It’s part of what adds value to living in our communities and state. It’s also important to remember that none of this just happens. It comes about because of good public policy decisions that value a public work force for the service and benefit it delivers to the community. That means having people with the know-how and providing them with the help and resources they need to do the job. The public health and snowstorm response are two dramatic and visible examples but there are many other kinds of work being done every day that are just as important and deserve support. It’s up to all of us to make sure that our elected officials understand that. 4 The Work Force January 2015
