He is assisted in this task by local volunteer sportsmen. 8 Fish Culturist I John Draper takes the temperature of the water in Fish Creek after stocking it full of brown trout. • The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) operates 12 fish hatcheries throughout New York. • DEC stocks more than 2.3 million catchable-size brook, brown and rainbow trout in more than 309 lakes and ponds, and roughly 2,900 miles of streams. • Other fish species, including walleye, salmon, steelhead, tiger muskellunge, are also produced in the hatcheries.
